It's very easy at times to join the hungry pack torching AFL umpires for on-field mis-steps. I've been part of it in the past.
I won't be joining in this time as fans and selected media line up to question Nick Foot, the ump at the centre of the Zak Butters controversy.
Why? I know Foot personally. I've worked with him as he's juggled media and umpiring commitments.
His integrity can not be questioned. Those attacking him on social media for working at both Sportsbet and the AFL as an umpire are ill-informed and delusional.
Foot is a passionate racing analyst with a big future in that area. Not once in any of his commitments with Sportsbet has he strayed into the area of footy.
He is a horse racing-only operator. Much like Sydney's Tom Papley, who is a racing lover and shrewd tipster.
There is zero crossover for Foot between betting and umpiring and he has been meticulous in keeping it that way.
As a regular with him on radio Sport 927, Foot was meticulous in separating the two and ultra professional when I occasionally grilled him on umpiring matters.
All of these appearances were ticked off by the AFL - as was his gig at Sportsbet, which was given the green light by the league in the pre-season of 2025.
If anyone has any problems with Foot's dual roles and the perceived perception it creates, they should direct their anger at the AFL - not Foot. He sought the league's approval and was given it.
He is allowed an interest outside of umpiring, surely. And with it comes a flourishing career path.
I don't know Butters personally, but by all accounts he's a fine individual, too.
We're heading for another case of he said/he said at the tribunal and this is messy for the AFL.
Perhaps there was a misunderstanding, and the lack of clear audio, helps nobody.
It might always be a mystery.
But what I do know is Foot is a person of character and integrity who doesn't deserve this pile on.

“His integrity can not be questioned. Those attacking him on social media for working at both Sportsbet and the AFL as an umpire are ill-informed and delusional.”
Conflict of interest.
“His integrity can not be questioned”.
Irrelevant.
(1) Conflict of interest is conflict of interest.
(9) “integrity” cannot substituted for hearing accuracy. particularly where there may be “awareness” regarding aforementioned conflict of interest. Irt may be a case where he “thinks” he heard something.
“I know Foot personally.”
Irrelevant – if anything it points to a conflict of interest that an article is written by this author… someone “not connected” would eliminate perception of any conflict.
However credit should be given for making the admission – regardless of it’s intent to “justify”…….
Bravo
I will be upfront about my bias as you are with yours. I am a Port fan who lives in the US. Doing so, I am able to bring some perspective with gambling and sports. There is ZERO chance an employee of a gambling company would be an official in any major North American sport. MLB’s hit king was caught gambling for his team to WIN when he was a player-manager. Lifetime suspension and ineligible to be elected into the HOF. Tim Donaghy was an NBA referee who was fired after providing “inside information” to gamblers. He was also investigated by the FBI for betting on games he officiated. I won’t even start to post the long list of point shaving incidents in college basketball.
Your disclosure of your relationship with Foot is admirable but it makes the rest of your article lose credibility. An employee of a gambling company belongs nowhere near the field of play. His employment during the week certainly creates a heightened sensitivity. In this case it appears that he heard the word “pay” and jumped right to it being an integrity question rather than a question about why the mark was paid. Everyone knows Butters certainly has a reputation that didn’t help either.
AFL officiating this season has been highly questionable. In both Port games Eleni Tee worked this year it’s obvious that she’s overcompensating to avoid questions about favoritism with her home state. Then you’ve got the Crows consistently getting screwed over. ARC replays/no replays. All worsened by rule changes this year that put a spotlight on the shortcomings of officials. Boundary and Goal umpires can lean on ARC and Field umpires which provides accountability. The AFL needs to make those Field umpires accountable. Hire them full time and put a strict prohibition on their (and close family members) employment by any gambling entity. Until they put up that brick wall, Foot (and anyone else in the AFL) deserves every question about their integrity.
