Brisbane has thrown their support around former premiership player Aaron Shattock as he fights for his life on the Gold Coast.

Shattock, father of three, was crushed by an excavator when it rolled, resulting in emergency surgery on Sunday for his severe chest injuries.

The 44-year-old builder played at the Lions for five seasons, notching up 57 games and claiming the 2002 premiership.

Shattock, husband to Claire and father to Mitch, Cleo and Sadie, was drafted from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens by the Lions with pick #45 in the 1998 AFL Draft.

Following the 2004 season, Shattock moved to Port Adelaide and played 11 times before he was delisted two years later.

Shattock's family provided an update during this tough time.

"The Shattock family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love, and kindness shown to Aaron during this incredibly challenging time,โ€ the statement said.

"Your compassion has provided him โ€” and our entire family โ€” with the strength and hope to keep fighting.

"Aaron remains in a critical but stable condition, and we are holding on to hope with each passing day.

"We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and express our sincerest appreciation for your continued care and support."

Former teammate and Carlton coach Michael Voss shared a touching tribute, describing Shattock "a ripping good fella" and "an outstanding teammate" according to the Lions website.

"I can't believe it โ€ฆ it's terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse. Our prayers are with him and his family."

Shattock's local football club, Labrador confirmed that he is in an induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital.

"On behalf of the Labrador Australian Football Club, we send our thoughts, love and prayers to the Shattock family during this challenging time," the club said on Sunday night.

"We can confirm that Aaron was involved in an excavator accident on his property on Sunday afternoon. He is currently in an induced coma at Gold Coast University Hospital, where he will remain under observation in the coming days.

"'Shatts' is dearly loved by his family, friens and the entire Labrador community. A true Labrador person and life member, Aaron has been a significant part of our club since 2007 - as a player, assistant coach, senior coach and committee member. His passion for our club is unmatched, and his presence is deeply valued.

"Our thoughts are with Aaron's family, and we kindly ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.

"The club will provide further updates when appropriate."
