Gary Ablett Jnr is set to return to Queensland in rejoining his teammates after spending time with his family in Melbourne.
The two-time Brownlow Medalist is expected to be flying up to Queensland in the next week, before isolating for a fortnight, reports The Herald Sun.
Ablett had flown home to support his son, Levi, who is battling a rare degenerative disease, while his partner, Jordan, lost her mother to lung cancer.
The AFL has placed a flight set to depart Melbourne in 16 days time, with Richmond's Shane Edwards and St Kilda's Dan Hannebery and assistant coach Jarryd Roughead among the names planning to return to their respective club hubs.
However, the Cats are pressing to have Ablett return sooner, with the little master expected to return to his side's hub and isolate for 14 days while being able to train in quarantine.
If Geelong are able to receive an exemption, Ablett could be able to line up for Chris Scott's side in the last two home and away fixtures in rounds 17 and 18.
Geelong's head of football Simon Lloyd told the Herald Sun that Ablett was aiming for a late return in the season.
“Gaz is keen to head up to Queensland sooner rather than later,” he said.
“We are keen to explore that opportunity. We understand there is a transition hub set up for September 1 but if there is an opportunity he would like to get up there soon.
“There are a number of players across the league who might look at trying to get up there soon.
“It’s a matter of weeks until September 1 so for us the best scenario would be working with the AFL to get Gary up there sooner.
“I have just received an email from our fitness guys and he has just finished a session today and they are big sessions, so he should move into our program quite smoothly.
“I am sure he would be welcomed by the team and coaches.”
Ablett hopes to return to the field in what is reportedly his last season in the game.
