Adelaide will add former Sydney tall Lachlan McAndrew to their training program this week in the wake of Kieran Strachan's recent foot injury.

The Crows have signed McAndrew to their SANFL squad and will call on the 209cm ruckman to train at West Lakes to boost their key position stocks.

The Swans delisted McAndrew at the end of the recent season - his fourth with the club - after two AFL games, having debuted last year against North Melbourne before playing the following week in his final senior appearance.

The 24-year-old averaged 7.8 disposals and 19.6 hitouts per game in the VFL this year, bringing his career games tally close to 50 appearances at the level since graduating from the Swans' Academy.

His venture to South Australia could earn him a career lifeline, with the timing of Strachan's foot surgery potentially opening the door for Adelaide to strengthen their brigade of talls.

Strachan's absence, which has ruled him out for the start of the 2025 season, leaves Reilly O'Brien and Riley Thilthorpe as the club's only experienced ruckmen, with 2024 Mid-Season Draft addition Toby Murray - who is better placed as a tall forward - still developing his craft as a dual-position prospect.

Adelaide don't have an open list spot for the current Supplemental Selection Period but could make a vacancy should they view Strachan's navicular injury as a long-term setback, with the club able to place the second-string ruckman on their inactive list.

The SSP will run until February 21, giving the Crows enough time to assess McAndrew on the training track and view Strachan's likely return timeframe before making a decision.

The Crows have required Strachan on just seven occasions across his six seasons on their list, with his pair of appearances this year coming two years after his most recent. Strachan's inclusion to face Richmond in Round 13 was not a forced change, with the club deciding to drop O'Brien to the SANFL for a two-week period.

Strachan has been an integral part of the club's reserves program in recent years, winning three of the Crows' past four best and fairests.

McAndrew's arrival adds to the SANFL signings of former Geelong-listed forward Cameron Taheny and recently delisted North Melbourne utility Blake Drury, among others, under the competition's new list policy for the league's pair of AFL-tied clubs.
