Adelaide free agent Elliott Himmelberg is set to weigh up his options at the end of the season, with the door said to be ajar for keen rival clubs to make their move.

Himmelberg is eligible as an unrestricted free agent this year as the two-year deal he penned in 2022 ends and takes him through to the open market.

The 26-year-old was heavily tied to GWS last year amid a potential move to reunite with brother Harry in New South Wales, with the Giants seeing Himmelberg as a "positional need".

A trade between the Crows and Giants failed to come to fruition, with Adelaide unable to acquire the desired key position talent to permit Himmelberg's desired exit.

"We'd really like to (acquire Himmelberg) as a positional need," GWS football boss Jason McCartney told Trade Radio at the time.

"We've had some really good chats with Adelaide a far way out because you have to be mindful that Elliott still has a year to run on a contract before he becomes a free agent.

"Adelaide have a little bit on their plate in manoeuvring a few things and they'd love to have some coverage in that position if he was to leave. We see it as an opportunity."

According toย AFL.com.au'sย Cal Twomey, the Giants' interest in a play for the Wagga Wagga and Redland product has fizzled in 2024 despite the option for Himmelberg to move at no trade cost.

While Adelaide have an offer on the table for the key position swingman, a decision from Himmelberg isn't expected to come until the off-season.

The situation has Himmelberg viewed as being "up for grabs" this year, with keen suitors seen as a strong chance to pry the 196cm talent out of West Lakes.

"Elliott Himmelberg, an unrestricted free agent, the Giants were keen last year and he was keen last year," Twomey toldย Gettable.ย

"This is a different story this time, I think he's available to a few more clubs. The Crows have an offer in front of him but he'll weigh things up at the end of the season.

"I think he's up for grabs as an unrestricted free agent, but it won't be the Giants this year. I don't think that will happen in this case."

Himmelberg has played eight games for the Crows this year, all of which as an attacking role player who has offered some ruck support - averaging a goal and 3.63 hitouts per game in 2024.

His return to Matthew Nicks' side in Round 7 was arguably his best performance of the season, amassing 15 disposals and two goals in a win over North Melbourne.

Despite victories in his past two appearances, Himmelberg has struggled to replicate that form over the last fortnight, recording 14 touches, two marks and one goal across that period.

Himmelberg has played 49 games for Adelaide since making his debut in 2018 but is yet to play more than 11 matches in a single season.
