The AFL has stated it is satisfied with Fox Footy's current arrangement to commentate interstate matches from their Melbourne studio, however the league will "keep an eye" on the matter following criticism from fans.

Unlike fellow AFL broadcast Channel 7, Fox Footy have decided to call matches outside of Victoria from their studio, an exercise that aided the company during recent seasons impacted by border restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While those restrictions have eased, Fox have continued to keep commentary staff in Melbourne to also save costs on sending a host of pundits and staff members all over the country each weekend.

The decision has left a portion of footy fans displeased with the overall product of interstate matches, with Fox Footy's decision not to take commentators to Round 3's Showdown a particular issue.

The league's broadcasting and clubs boss Travis Auld has come to the defence of the broadcast partner, believing the current form of Fox Footy's commentary isn't detrimental to the product.

When quizzed on SEN on the matter, Auld said the AFL is continuing to monitor Fox Footy's product and feedback from fans.

"As long as it's not impacting the experience (for viewers)," Auld said on the matter.

"People have differing views and at times you hear people criticise the broadcasters for not being there but they actually are there, at times it's hard to tell for a viewer.

"There's a lot of views in this space. I think they're doing a really good job, I think that's evident in our ratings so far this year, but we're working with them every week, they're always looking for better ways to do things.

"I don't think at the moment it's causing any issues, but we'll keep an eye on it."

Fox have taken staff to South Australia for this week's Gather Round, where five of the nine matches in the state will be broadcasted solely on Foxtel.

Most rounds will see at least four matches played outside of Victoria, most of which aren't televised on free-to-air TV for Melbourne viewers.
