Carlton's national recruiting manager Michael Agresta has outlined the club's draft strategy ahead of the 2024 AFL National Draft, speaking on AFL Media's Gettable podcast.
With pick 3 in hand, the Blues are set to make their highest draft selection since landing Sam Walsh in 2018, aiming to secure one of this year's top prospects.
Agresta revealed that Carlton is eyeing a shortlist of five elite talents for their top pick, indicating the club's satisfaction with their draft position.
"We've been really transparent - there's probably five prospects we're considering," Agresta said.
He emphasised that the Blues have conducted multiple interviews with these players, including involving head coach Michael Voss in the process.
"We think it's a real pointy end, and one of those five will definitely be there at number 3," he added.
Speculation suggests Carlton could target midfielders like Finn O'Sullivan, Jagga Smith, or Sid Draper, with Agresta hinting at the desire to bolster their engine room.
He stressed that the selection will not just serve immediate needs but is a decision for the next decade.
"We're making this decision for the next 10-15 years, not just for today," he said, highlighting a long-term view.
Another key focus for the Blues is managing potential bids on father-son prospects Ben and Lucas Camporeale, sons of former Carlton premiership player Scott Camporeale. Agresta described the twins as "unbelievable competitors," with distinct play styles.
"Lucas is more of an outside player who can play half-back, while Ben is a natural ball-winner with strong overhead abilities," he noted.
The club anticipates bids for the Camporeale twins in the second half of the draft, aiming to secure them without sacrificing early picks.
Agresta also mentioned the importance of Carlton's pick number 38, which could be used before any potential bid on the Camporeales. This strategic flexibility allows the Blues to select an additional talent before matching bids, enhancing their overall draft intake.
With a clear plan in place and a focus on adding depth to their midfield and defensive stocks, the Blues are well-prepared as they look to build a strong foundation for 2025 and onwards.
