Geelong Cats GM of Football Stephen Wells was satisfied with the club's 2024 AFL National Draft selections, describing it as "a good mix of players" who complement the team's current list.

Speaking at a press conference following the draft, Wells highlighted the club's deliberate focus on diversity and development.

Geelong used picks 44, 52, 66, and 69 to secure Jay Polkinghorne, Jacob Molier, Lennox Hofmann, and Keighton Matofai-Forbes, respectively; selections praised by Wells.

“Bringing in Jay, Jacob, Lennox, and Keighton - all different types of players - we are very confident they've deserved their opportunity on an AFL list and can develop in our system,” he said

The Cats' draft strategy centred on securing versatile talent with long-term potential. While Wells noted the draftees would require time to develop given their age, he stressed the club's commitment to providing an environment where they could thrive.

“I don't like putting limits on players or too much expectation… what we like to do is bring the players to the club and help them get to the best they can be as quickly as we can,” he said.

Jay Polkinghorne (Pick 44): The Norwood product is a 191cm forward known for his aerial ability and reliable goal-kicking. Despite missing the start of 2024 with a knee injury, Polkinghorne showcased his potential with standout performances in the SANFL Reserves, including a grand final display that caught the Cats' attention.

Jacob Molier (Pick 52): The 202cm ruckman from Sturt impressed with his athleticism and versatility. Wells emphasised Molier's ability to contribute both in the ruck and as a key-position player. “We think he's a versatile player… athletic and a fantastic mark,” Wells said.

Lennox Hofmann (Pick 66): The dashing defender from Sandringham Dragons boasts strong intercept marking and a high football IQ. Hofmann's agility and team-oriented mindset make him a valuable addition to the Cats' backline.

Keighton Matofai-Forbes (Pick 69): The Western Jets captain is a powerful forward with a booming left foot and strong leadership credentials. Wells believes Matofai-Forbes has the potential to expand his role beyond the forward line.

Wells acknowledged the developmental journey ahead for these players but expressed optimism about their potential.

“They all had their moments over the course of the year… we think they've provided us with the opportunity to bring some exciting talent into the club that has got plenty of development left,” he said.

The Cats also added Xavier Ivisic, Patrick Retschko, and Joe Pike during the Rookie Draft, further strengthening their depth across the ground.

With this latest haul, Geelong has positioned itself to continue fostering young talent while maintaining the competitive edge that has defined their success in recent years.
