Greater Western Victoria (GWV) prospect Oliver Hannaford is a versatile utility whose big-game performances have quickly driven his draft stocks up.
A remarkable 7.92-second agility test result, as well as a six-goal Coates Talent League qualifying final display, are two major reasons why Hannaford has skyrocketed into early second-round contention and perhaps even as a late first-rounder should his value maintain its rapid rise.
However, Hannaford has the capability of impacting all thirds of the ground. Initially staking his claim as a small defender, the 18-year-old also trialled game time throughout the midfield. His run-and-carry and intense defensive pressure were weaponised in the back third, whilst his explosive power and toughness were welcomed in the midfield, despite some cause for concern with his endurance.
However, his displays in the forward line were stark in comparison and the key turning point in his surging draft capital. Despite a small sample size of his abilities as a forward, it is clear Hannaford has tremendous upside and potential to develop into an exciting attacking presence.
The versatile small has been likened to Hawthorn's Nick Watson for his ability to take over in big games and thrive in clutch situations, whilst his defensive pressure across all areas of the ground is similar to Giant Brent Daniels.
Hannaford suits the list needs of the Western Bulldogs and West Coast, who need a front-half spark, whilst Sydney could also aim to pick up Hannaford to add another fiery ground-level attacker with Tom Papley. Should Hannaford slip through those selections, Essendon could swoop on the GWV product and pair him with fellow small forward Isaac Kako in this year's draft haul.
