The Adelaide Crows secured a crucial addition to their midfield with the selection of explosive South Adelaide product Sid Draper at Pick No. 4 in the 2024 AFL National Draft.
Draper, a lifelong Crows supporter, couldn't contain his excitement after hearing his name called on draft night.
โIt was really only when the name was read out, you got that feeling that you're in that range,โ Draper said.
โI'm just so grateful the Crows chose me. It means so much to me to wear this jumper, the team I've supported for so long.โ
Draper's selection caps off an impressive junior career. The 18-year-old showcased versatility and athleticism at South Adelaide, where he averaged 22 disposals and five clearances in the SANFL this season, despite battling early injury setbacks.
Known for his speed, agility, and powerful ball-winning ability, Draper also captained South Australia's U18 team at the national championships, earning All-Australian honours for the second consecutive year.
Adelaide's National Recruiting Manager, Hamish Ogilvie, praised Draper's character and footballing attributes.
โHe's tough, can win his own footy, and is explosive when he gets it,โ Ogilvie said.
โSid's a great character and a leader, and to get him at Pick 4 is a fantastic result for our footy club.โ
Reflecting on his journey, Draper credited his older brother Arlo, who previously spent time on Collingwood's AFL list, for valuable advice.
โArlo's been an awesome help. I think the main thing I've learned from him is on-field things he picked up from seasoned players and coaches,โ Draper shared.
The young midfielder has already set his sights on making an impact, with Round 1 firmly in his mind.
โIt's definitely a goal, but I have to work hard for it, earn the respect, and ultimately it's up to the coaching staff,โ Draper said.
Draper is particularly eager to train alongside Crows captain Jordan Dawson and veteran Taylor Walker, describing them as players he greatly admires.
"I think the obvious one is Dawson. Such a professional player and such a champion of the game."
"Taylor Walker as well; such an experienced player, he'll have a wealth of knowledge."
While Draper's shin injury and a back issue limited his testing at the draft combine, he reassured fans he's ready to embrace pre-season.
"Feeling good now but we'll just see how the medicos think of it and if they want to take a conservative approach,โ he said, adding that his previous experience with overtraining has taught him valuable lessons.
For Adelaide, Draper represents the next generation of midfield talent. With his explosive pace, strong character, and passion for the club, Draper's journey to the AFL is only just beginning.
