The AFL is expected to make technological tweaks to its goal review technology following a series of contentious calls made across the past pair of seasons.

Late last year, Carlton winger Blake Acres found himself at the forefront of two such incidents, with the ex-Saint and Docker adjudicated to have touched balls on the goal line to see the Blues claim narrow wins against Melbourne and Sydney in the finals.

Prior to this point, Adelaide was eliminated from the September running after Ben Keays' dramatic winner against Sydney was incorrectly called a behind rather than a goal.

Richmond spearhead Tom Lynch also saw a late shot on elimination final night in 2022 called a behind - a call that still rankles members of the Tiger Army.

In an effort to improve and remain on the cutting edge, recently minted AFL footy operations boss Laura Kane travelled to the United States to witness how both the NFL and NBA run their own reviews.

Members of Kane's operations team also travelled to Formula One and English Premier League headquarters to get the lowdown on how the growing motorsport and the world game conduct their own evaluations.

Speaking after taking a tour of the Melbourne Park Australian Open facilities, Kane told Mitch Cleary of 7 News that the league would not be remaining stagnant heading forward.

"We've been looking at all of the different aspects of the Australian Open: back of house, technology, player facilities, the courts and everything in between," Kane said.

"What's important to me is that we're always at the forefront, we have cutting-edge technology, we have the best that's available. But I'm also mindful that we roll that out across all of our stadiums in AFL around the country. That's a really important consistency that we strive for."

Updates to the league's goal review technology are expected to be made ahead of the inaugural Opening Round in early March.

There has been no word yet as to what these amendments are, nor the costs involved.

Opening Round will commence on Thursday, March 7 when Melbourne travels to face Sydney at the SCG.
