Fox Footy has made a series of major changes to its broadcast team for the 2025 AFL season, headlined by the signing of legendary player and coach Leigh Matthews.
The AFL Hall of Famer's role is yet to be confirmed, but Fox Sports Managing Director Steve Crawley emphasised Matthews' stature, stating, "When he talks, everyone pays attention."
Matthews' addition follows his recent departure from Channel Nine, where he briefly co-hosted Footy Furnace.
Fox Footy has also revamped its commentary and analysis teams, with new hosts and changes across several key programs. Garry Lyon will replace Mark Robinson as co-host of AFL 360, joining Gerard Whateley, who steps into an expanded role.
Whateley, a seasoned commentator, will also team up with Anthony Hudson to call Friday night matches, marking a new marquee pairing for the network.
Hudson expressed excitement about reuniting with Whateley, saying, "There's no one better who can sum up a storyline."
Former Richmond star Jack Riewoldt is set to take over as host of On the Couch, joining regulars Nathan Buckley and Jonathan Brown.
This move follows Lyon's transition to AFL 360, and it positions Riewoldt, who has made a successful move into media since retiring, as a prominent figure in Fox Footy's coverage.
Fox Footy's changes come as part of a broader shakeup in AFL broadcasting, with networks scrambling to secure top talent.
Channel Seven has expanded its lineup, signing notable figures like Kane Cornes and Caroline Wilson. Seven's new rights deal for 2025 includes enhanced digital streaming via 7plus, increasing competition in the broadcast landscape.
Fox Footy, available on Kayo and Foxtel, will be the exclusive home for Saturday matches nationally for the first eight rounds, providing subscribers with "Super Saturday" coverage featuring back-to-back games and extended analysis.
Fox Sports' Crawley anticipates new subscribers and enhanced viewing options in 2025.
"The combination of Huddo and Gerard on Fridays is a new dynamic for us, and we believe it will be a standout feature for fans," he said.
With other recent additions, including Shaun Burgoyne and Tom Hawkins, Fox Footy aims to lead the charge in delivering comprehensive and expert commentary across all its broadcasts.
Matthews' arrival marks a significant win for the network as it continues to finalise its 2025 lineup.
