Western Bulldogs recruit James Harmes has been handed a suspension for headbutting ex-teammate Steven May during Sunday's loss to Melbourne, with the AFL's Match Review Officer charging seven players from the final three games of Round 1.

The Harmes incident took place during the fourth quarter of the Dogs' defeat to the Demons, with Harmes using his head to make high contact with May off the ball.

The former Demon's actions have been graded as intentional conduct, low impact and high contact, resulting in a one-game suspension.

Harmes can choose to accept the charge and miss his side's Round 2 encounter with the Gold Coast Suns, or could challenge the MRO's verdict at the AFL Tribunal in the hope of being cleared to play.

A decision by the club as to whether they will challenge the charge will be made on Tuesday.

As well as Harmes' charge, Hawthorn's James Sicily (kicking), Essendon's Mason Redman (striking) and Gold Coast's Malcolm Rosas (headbutt or contact using head) were also been handed suspensions from Round 1 incidents. Sicily is set to challenge his ban at the AFL Tribunal this week.

Elsewhere, No.1 pick Harley Reid has been charged with careless contact with an umpire. He, teammate Jack Petruccelle and Port Adelaide's Ollie Wines can each accept $1250 fines for the same charge.

Eagle Elliot Yeo has been charged with tripping and can accept a $1250 fine with an early guilty plea.

Fremantle pair Michael Walters (tripping) and Matthew Johnson (rough conduct) can also accept reduced fines of $1250 and $2500 respectively with early pleas.
