The AFL's Match Review officer has handed suspensions to Fremantle's Caleb Serong and Essendon ruckman Andrew Phillips from Sunday's action, with the former heading to the AFL Tribunal.

Serong was handed a one-game ban for a rough conduct charge involving Carlton's Adam Cerra during the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Blues.

The MRO graded Serong's actions as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact. He and the club have chosen to challenge the charge at the AFL Tribunal.

If successful, Serong will be available for Saturday's game against Collingwood. If unsuccessful, he would then be next available in Round 19 against Sydney.

The Tribunal hearing is set to take place on Tuesday evening.

Phillips has been charged with rough conduct for his fourth-quarter incident involving Adelaide's Reilly O'Brien during Sunday's win over the Crows.

The MRO graded Phillips' hit on O'Brien as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, resulting in a one-game ban.

Now accepted, Phillips will be unavailable for selection for Saturday night's game against Geelong. He will now be next available for his side's Round 19 game against the Western Bulldogs.

Elsewhere, Crow Josh Rachele can accept a $2,000 fine with an early plea after being charged with tripping Bomber Andrew McGrath. The incident was graded as intentional conduct, low impact and body contact by the MRO.
