Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield is facing a potential sanction from the Match Review Officer after an incident in Saturday night's clash with St Kilda.

Running towards Saints youngster Ryan Byrnes, Dangerfield applied a light bump on Byrnes' shoulder, however, his elbow slid up after the initial shoulder contact and hit Byrnes' head.

Byrnes quickly jumped up following the act and continued to play for the rest of the game, showing no signs of injury or concussion from Dangerfield's errant elbow.

The initial shoulder contact could potentially help Dangerfield avoid suspension for a high bump; however, the 35-year-old could still be sanctioned with a fine for the hit.

Journalist Jay Clark said post-game on Fox Footy that the fact Byrnes quickly bounced back from the bump and continued playing suggests the incident will be graded as low impact, careless conduct and high contact, which will result in a fine according to the MRO's grading system.

In Round 1 Richmond's Tom Lynch was handed a one-week suspension after a high bump on Carlton's Tom De Koning. Lynch's bump was graded similarly to how Dangerfield's is expected to be, however the force of the Tiger's bump was graded as medium impact, resulting in the one game ban.

Dangerfield could potentially face the same sanction, although the initial contact with Byrnes' shoulder is likely to be the star's saving grace and see him escape suspension.

Should Dangerfield receive a fine, he'll be available to play in the rescheduled Opening Round fixture next Saturday night against the Lions, in a chance to avoid back-to-back losses after the shock defeat to St Kilda.
