The AFL is reportedly close to unveiling a pre-season match that would see an Indigenous All-Stars team clash with a 'World' side that would feature the league's best multicultural players.
The league has previously held matches featuring an Indigenous All-Stars side, with the original team founded in 1973 and played in Lae, Papua New Guinea.
The AFL last hosted a match including the Indigenous All-Stars in 2015, with West Coast included in the game at Leederville Oval.
That squad included Indigenous icons Shaun Burgoyne, Shane Edwards and Jarrod Harbrow as the Eagles claimed an eight-point win.
Current AFL-listed players Brad Hill, Jarman Impey and Jack Martin also featured in the match, and could be part of the league's next showcase event.
According to 7 News, a game between an Indigenous All-Stars outfit and a multicultural side is likely to take place in February.
Swans star Lance Franklin has been named as a "major drawcard" for the match, which was discussed during the AFL's 2022 AFL/AFLPA Indigenous and Multicultural Player Summit this week.
"The AFL is one the verge of announcing a game to celebrate all cultures," 7 News reporter Mitch Cleary revealed on Thursday night.
"It will be played between an Indigenous All-Stars and World lineup featuring AFL multicultural players.
"Superstar Lance Franklin a major drawcard ahead of his expected last season."
An Indigenous side also featured in the short-lived AFLX competition under the branding 'Deadly', with Eddie Betts, Tim Kelly and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti all featuring in the squad in 2019.
