The AFL has decided to once again display the shot clock on the scoreboard for the entire quarter following a discussion between coaches and the league bosses on Tuesday night.

Following an incident last season which saw North Melbourne forward Mason Wood deliberately stare at the clock with the ball with just seconds left over their close win against St Kilda, the league decided to take the clock off the screen for the final two minutes of every quarter.

However, after Shaun Higgins was lining up for the Roos against the Western Bulldogs on the weekend and was tackled because his time had run out, it was determined the AFL would revert back to its old interpretation of the rule.

The rule has been changed back to the old interpretation with one major difference however, as more power has been awarded to the umpires this time around.

AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean said umpires will have the ability to call 'play on' if they believe a player is deliberately trying to run down the clock.
