The AFL Commission are set to make a call on the twilight Grand Final debate over the next fortnight.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan will deliver his recommendation at Thursday week’s commission meeting.

The AFL boss’ decision will go a long way to deciding whether the league stays true to the tradition of a day-time Grand Final, or create history by holding the big game under lights for the first time.

McLachlan told AFL.com.au that he expects the matter will be settled next week.

“There is a recommendation going to the commission next week,” he said.

“We aim to have a decision next week.”

With announcements typically coming at the mid-way point of the season, the AFL CEO said that nothing should be read into his recommendation being made before the season in 2019.

“The issues, the debate, it is always the same – managing progression with tradition, you balance those two up.

“The core of the debate is no different… I think it (a twilight Grand Final) is inevitable, but that is a view for some time in the future.”

McLachlan stressed that the fans and traditions of the game would be core considerations in the decision-making process.

“Our broadcasters are important, but this is a decision for supporters. The question is: could it be better by moving it a couple of hours?

“Twilight is an incredible slot, on the other hand the tradition and history is so important.

“It won’t be a money thing.”
