Richmond's Alex Rance and Hawthorn's Shaun Burgoyne believe players who have been concussed should not play the following weekend.
Head knocks were the topic of conversation once again throughout the week, following Joel Selwood's concussion in the opening seconds of Geelong game with Fremantle, with the Cats keen to play the Geelong skipper this weekend.
Rance and Burgoyne both spoke about the issue on The Footy Show on Thursday night, and suggested each player should have a one-week break after suffering a concussion.
"It's becoming really well publicised about head injuries this year, and I think it has to be a mandatory one-week off," Rance said during the telecast.
Co-host Rebecca Maddern argued that he jogged off the field and should be right to play, although Rance replied and said "but you've only got one brain Bec, and it doesn't grow back, you kind of need it for later."
"He is obviously one of the hardest nuts going around, and he would play with one leg hanging off and there's no doubt about that.
"I think if it's a blanket rule it makes it easier for everyone and those players who potentially maybe are sitting on the borderline, and especially players who are important as Joel is to the team, it's taken out of their hands to make that decision."
Burgoyne echoed Rance's comments, and said a week-off would be in the best interest of the players for life after football.
"I agree, if you're knocked out cold and you're asleep on the oval, there probably should be a one week rest for the whole league," Burgoyne said.
"Like you said, you've got one brain and you've got to protect it. It's not for now, it's for 15 and 20 years time when you're going to feel those effects."
