The AFL season will be suspended for a minimum of 30 days if a player tests positive to COVID-19.

League boss Gillon McLachlan said earlier in the week if a player contracts the virus the shut down would last two weeks.

But speaking to 3AW on Friday morning, McLachlan confirmed that a 30-day suspension would be enforced in such an event.

“We’ll certainly stand down for a minimum of 30 days,” McLachlan said.

"We need to make sure our protocols are completely tight."

After seeing Richmond and Carlton players share drink bottles in Thursday night's season opener, the AFL chief said that there would be stricter rules implemented.

"I've spoken to Steve Hocking this morning," he said.

"It's the first game, I think you'll forgive everyone for being a bit habitual.

"We'll get the protocols better and I think you'll see changes tonight."
