AFL trade news: De Goey, Grundy reportedly on the trade table

“I’d be shocked and amazed if De Goey isn’t playing for either Geelong or St Kilda next year.”

The race for out-of-contract star Jordan De Goey has narrowed to just two clubs as the finals bound Magpies consider a list exodus for 2023.

De Goey, who has played 131 games for Collingwood since his debut in 2015, will be a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2022 season. The talented Pie was offered a new deal by the club, but the offer was taken off the table after the 26-year-old's latest off-field indiscretion.

Several clubs have been linked to De Goey, including St Kilda, Geelong and Essendon, among others, though the list of club's in contention for his signature appears to be thinning.

Speaking on Nine's Footy Classified on Monday night, report Sam McClure revealed that Collingwood are looking to make some "brutal" calls on their playing list heading into the future, with De Goey and Brodie Grundy potentially on offer to rivals.

“They’re going through an unbelievable run, potentially making a case for top four, all the while behind the scenes (they're) considering making brutal calls on next year’s list and the playing futures of Brodie Grundy and Jordan De Goey,” McLure said.

“We know already that Jordan De Goey is unlikely to be at Collingwood next year, clubs have become aware. In fact, Jordan himself has become aware that he’s being shopped around and he himself and his management have taken it upon themselves to start making their own calls to football clubs.

“I’d be shocked and amazed if De Goey isn’t playing for either Geelong or St Kilda next year.”

While De Goey is currently without a contract for the 2022 season, it is a different story with ruckman Grundy. The 28-year-old signed a huge deal with the Pies in 2020, turning his back on the lure of going home to South Australia, to recommit to the club until 2027.

With the recent form of Darcy Cameron, Grundy's value to Collingwood has been the subject of much speculation, with McClure now stating that the club were willing to consider offers for the two-time best and fairest.

“But the Brodie Grundy one is now the worst kept secret in football. He’s got five years left on a deal worth a million dollars a season, we know the circumstances surrounding how good a form he was in when he signed that deal, and clubs now believe and are being told that he’s very gettable,” he continued.

“They’ve been very open and upfront with both Brodie and his management that they’re not sure yet, they’re clearly waiting to see what, if any offers come.

“I’m not saying Brodie Grundy won’t be at Collingwood next year, in fact, I think he’s probably more likely to stay with the deal that he’s on … that is his preference, he’s very happy in Victoria.”

Both De Goey (quad) and Grundy (knee) are currently sidelined with injury as Collingwood look to continue their eight-game winning run.
