Out-of-favour Melbourne forward Tom McDonald is "officially up for grabs" according to journalist Sam McClure.

McDonald struggled to fill a role in Simon Goodwin's side this season and despite having two more years on his contract, the 28-year-old is likely to depart the Demons.

Speaking onย Sportsday, McClure suggested that McDonald's future with Melbourne is in the balance.

โ€œTom McDonald is officially up for grabs,โ€ he said.

โ€œHeโ€™s got two years left on his deal, the Magpies have reached out and just asked some questions. Iโ€™m not sure whether theyโ€™ll be the ones he eventually goes to ... I donโ€™t think heโ€™ll be at Melbourne next year.โ€

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy added to the report, believing there to be a rift between both parties.

โ€œI think theyโ€™ve made their minds up. It sounds like that relationship is just about broken,โ€ he said.

โ€œHeโ€™s moving and theyโ€™re happy for him to move ... it looks to me like heโ€™s just lost that confidence that he had.

โ€œMaybe heโ€™s destined to return to the backline. Iโ€™m not sure where Collingwood see him fitting in but they recruited Jeremy Howe as a forward and turned him into one of the great defenders of the last five or six years.โ€
