Sydney star Isaac Heeney has taken back the lead in our 2024 MVP race despite his side falling to St Kilda in Round 17.

Heeney managed five votes in the loss to the Saints to go three votes ahead of Collingwood's Nick Daicos, who managed just a sole vote from the weekend.

Carlton's Patrick Cripps, who entered the round in third place, also managed to poll in a defeat, recording 15 votes as the Blues' best player in their clash with GWS to now sit just six votes off Heeney's lead.

Neither Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli or Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn managed to poll over the weekend, with Port Adelaide's Zak Butters going between the pair in sixth after polling 17 votes against the Dogs.

Essendon's Zach Merrett was easily his side's top performer, with the Bombers ball winner moving to 166 votes for the year to be within reaching distance of top spot heading into Round 18.

Merrett was one of just two players to poll a perfect 20-vote performance over the weekend, with Brisbane star Lachie Neale earning unanimous nods for his dominant display against Adelaide on Sunday.

That outing has seen the Lions co-captain rise from 10th on our leaderboard to eighth, surpassing Fremantle's Calen Seron and Swans gun Errol Gulden in the process.

Other top vote-getters from the weekend were North Melbourne young gun Harry Sheezel, Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee, Fremantle forward Josh Teacy, Saints stopper Callum Wilkie and Melbourne midfielder Trent Rivers, who all polled 19 votes each.

Geelong duo Tom Stewart and Jeremy Cameron were each seen as best-afield from our panel for Saturday's win over Hawthorn, while Jack Buckley, Jesse Hogan and Cripps each earned at least one five-vote nod.
