Lauren Arnell has created history by becoming the first AFLW footballer to become a senior coach in the competition post-retirement.

Arnell was officially named Port Adelaide's inaugural AFLW coach on Tuesday, and it's not the first time she's created history - she was named Carlton's inaugural AFLW captain and played in the Brisbane Lions' first premiership.

Arnell said it was a "privilege" to be appointed as Port Adelaide's first AFLW coach.

"It is a privilege to be appointed Port Adelaide’s inaugural AFLW coach and an opportunity I am very much looking forward to," Arnell said.

"The history of success at Port Adelaide and the expectations that come with this are not lost on me. It’s what has drawn me to this club. I want be part of something great and I can already see we are building something special within our AFLW program."

Arnell added that she was "excited by the Club's progressive, bold vision, including the transformation of the Alberton Oval precinct."

"Our female athletes will enjoy world-class training facilities and will provide future generations of young girls and women a pathway to represent Port Adelaide on the national stage," she said.

"To be the first AFLW coach in a club that is more than 150 years old is truly humbling and I can’t wait for our team to write their own chapter in Port Adelaide’s rich history of success."

Arnell's announcement is big news for the Power as they look to shake Adelaide Crows' newly-accomplished dynasty.

After claiming their record-breaking third AFLW premiership on Saturday, Adelaide will now set their sights on another momentous task - trying to keep its premiership outfit together.

Nipping at their heels is the Power, who has been linked with Crows superstar duo Erin Phillips and Anne Hatchard.

Phillips' rumoured homecoming will be on a scale of seismic proportion as she is the most decorated player in AFLW history, and shares a long history with the Port Adelaide Football Club - Phillips' Father Greg played 343 games and won eight premierships for the Black and White across his decorated SANFL career.

This year's best on ground medallist in the 2022 AFLW Grand Final, Anne Hatchard, has also been linked to the Power.

Hatchard, who finished one vote shy of Lions star Emily Bates in the AFLW Best and Fairest, capped off a stellar 2022 season by being named best on the ground in the Crows' 13-point premiership win.

Now regarded as one of the competition's best players, a move to the Power with Phillips could see them embark on another South Australian footballing dynasty.
