Brisbane Lions CEO Gregg Swann has denied that ex-skipper Dayne Beams would be interested in a return to Victoria.
Reports surfaced earlier this week that suggested Beams might be keen on a move back to Victoria at some stage, given that is where his wife is from.
But Swann was quick to shut those rumours down.
โWe were surprised, I rang his manager just to check and he was as surprised as we were and he was actually quite angry about it so weโre confident itโs got no substance to it,โ Swann toldย SEN Breakfast.
โI think Fagan has spoken to (Beams), Thursdayโs training day so theyโll have a chat, but weโre happy that it isnโt true.โ
Beams stood down as the Lions captain last week to deal with the passing of his father, and Swann said the club would be supporting their star midfielder through this tough time.
โDayneโs the eldest brother and he sort of took that on and looked after his father for the last stages of his life so that was pretty traumatic,โ he said.
โWe went to the funeral and he was okay for a while, then I think a couple of weeks later it all hit him and as he talked about, he used to go to the footy with his dad and it all sort of weighed on him.
โI think it was bugging him that he was running out and tossing the coin, but he wasnโt really being captain and so thatโs one of the reasons he stood aside.
โI donโt think itโs any coincidence his last two games have been his best two.โ
Swann also revealed that if Beams did wish to retain the captaincy, it be his for the taking.
โIf Beams wants to come back and do it, then heโs the captain, but if not then we go on as we are with Zorko,โ Swann said.
The 28-year old is averaging 26.4 disposals, 4.3 clearances 3.8 tackles per game this season for the Lions.
