Good news if you're a Carlton fan as co-captain Sam Docherty has extended his stay at the Blue-baggers after signing a two-year extension.

The new deal will see Docherty stay at the club to 2023 as he already had a year to run on his contract.

A Carlton supporter growing up, Docherty made the headlines for one of football's most feel-good stories as he made a comeback to the Blues' lineup after having two years on the sidelines.

Docherty held a large part in the Blues 2020 season as he played 16 games (missing just one game for the season), averaging 18.6 disposals, 5.2 marks and was ranked 8th in the league for total rebound 50s.

“I’ve been at the football club for seven seasons now, I think I speak for every player in our group when I say that it is time to translate our hard work into success,” Docherty told the club website.

“I have enormous belief in the way we are going about it, our hunger, our competitive edge, the standards we have set – that has all gone to a new level and we are seeing the results of that.

“There are no guarantees for the next few years except for the fact we will be doing everything we possibly can to achieve success for our members and supporters.”

Carlton list manager Nick Austin said that the club is pleased with the energy and leadership credentials he provides.

“Doc is a terrific footballer but he clearly brings so much more than that to our club,” Austin said.

“He has experienced a lot during his first eight years at the elite level, however, his focus and determination to better himself and his teammates each and every day has never wavered.

“On top of that, he has led our football club exceptionally well over the last two years. He is the type of player and person you want driving the high standards that have been set, which is why we couldn’t be happier to have Doc commit for at least the next three years.”
