Carlton small forward Matt Owies won't be seen in a navy blue jumper again, with reports indicating a trade is expected.

Owies has been held without a contract for 2025 and was encouraged by the Blues to explore his options, with Gold Coast and West Coast potential landing spots.

Despite kicking 60 goals in the past two seasons, the 27-year-old isn't seen as part of the future at Carlton, with Jesse Motlop, Corey Durdin, and Orazio Fantasia favoured ahead of him, with the latter locked away until at least the end of next year.

"It's definitely one of the more intriguing stories for me of this year. He doesn't have a contract offer at Carlton for 2025, and he's kicked 33 goals this season and 60 across the last two seasons," SEN's Sam Edmund told AFL Trade Radio.

"He won't be going back there (to Carlton), he's done at Carlton, that door is shut.

"He'll be going somewhere is my mail and in this trade period. He's got a couple of options, and he needs to make a call, and that call could come today.

"It's been reported that he's met with Gold Coast and West Coast, but he will be traded as soon as today. Won't be going back to Carlton. That ship has sailed.

"His days at Carlton are over, and it's happened very quickly. It's, in many ways, hard to believe. It's not a money issue. They think their small-forward future is tied into the likes of Jesse Motlop, Corey Durdin, Ashton Moir they want to get games into.

"List spots are super tight, as well as finances. He was just out of contract at the wrong time. If he was contracted, they wouldn't be shopping him."

Owies joined the Blues as a Category B Rookie in 2018, playing 72 games (kicking 89 goals) and was subsequently elevated to the senior list in 2023.

It comes as the club announced a six-year extension of All-Australian defender Jacob Weitering, locking him away until the end of 2031.
