Carlton are understood to have contacted ex-Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley in regards to their vacant senior coaching position.
According to The Age, Blues president Luke Sayers, who is a close friend to the Magpies great, is understood to have 'sounded out' Buckley's availability for next season.
The 2003 Brownlow Medal winner parted ways with Collingwood in June and is yet to confirm his next career path.
However, Buckley's manager Craig Kelly has told The Age his client's next 12 months won't be involved in the coaching landscape.
“Nathan’s not coaching any club for at least 12 months,” Kelly said. “He’s spending some time re-setting and then he’ll assess his options.”
Sayers and the Blues are believed to have looked to discuss Buckley's options earlier this week, around the same time David Teague's departure from Princes Park was confirmed.
Carlton have already made contact with former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon for the vacancy, with the 54-year-old seen as the leading candidate for the Blues job.
Lyon has stepped into several media roles since departing the Dockers in 2019, a venture that Buckley is tipped to take for 2022.
The senior coaching change is the latest of several key figures parting ways with the Ikon Park club, with assistant Dale Amos also sacked by the Blues in the wake of the club's external review.
Sayers, who officially took over as the Blues president last week, told 3AW on Friday that he wasn't sure "anyone is guaranteed anything in life" when questioned on the position's of CEO Cain Liddle and GM of Football Brad Lloyd.
