Essendon have announced Natalie Wood as their inaugural AFLW senior coach.
Wood, a former senior coach of Geelong's VFLW program, ventures to Tullamarine after a two-year stint as an assistant coach of the Western Bulldogs.
A five-time premiership player across her time with the Darebin Falcons and Melbourne University, Woods adds plenty of nous and experience as both a player and coach, which is sure to transition into her time in the Bombers' coaches' box.
Wood expressed her delight in being appointed as Essendon's first-ever senior coach of their AFLW side, who will enter the league next season.
“I am extremely proud to join the Essendon family and very grateful to have the opportunity to lead Essendon’s inaugural AFLW side,” Wood's said.
“The club has developed a very strong women’s program and culture since their introduction to the VFLW and I look forward to continuing the development of women’s football at Essendon.”
“To be joining the red and black family, and a club like Essendon with its rich history, is a true privilege.”
Having also spent time as a high school teacher and as a mentor for emerging female football prospects, Wood boasts a stellar record of nurturing talent and youth.
Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell lauded the pedigree Wood will add to the Bombers' journey into the AFLW.
“Natalie was the standout candidate throughout this process with her vast experience and passion for the game and educating players, and we’re thrilled to make this significant appointment,” Campbell said.
“Natalie has an extensive career as a teacher, player and coach and is a fantastic character to lead the club towards and during our first AFLW season.
“Natalie’s football and leadership knowledge made her the most suitable candidate for the role. She is highly respected throughout women’s football and we are extremely excited to welcome someone of her quality to the club.”
Joining Wood at the Hangar will be Essendon's first-ever player signing in Georgia Nanscawen, who remains in the red sash after being signed to the club's AFLW program from their reserves squad.
