Essendon star Andrew McGrath will mis the Bombers' pre-season practice match against Carlton after sustaining a head knock at training, per AFL.com.au.

McGrath will now be sidelined for at least 12 days under the AFL's new concussion protocols and will undergo further assessment at the end of the recovery window.

The Bombers are set to face the Blues next Thursday at Ikon Park behind closed doors, with McGrath now joining Michael Hurley (hip infection), Jake Stringer (Achilles), David Zaharakis (knee), Sam Draper (leg) and Patrci kAmbrose (foot) on the sidelines.

If the flashy onballer is able to return to full health at the end of the 12 days, McGrath could be in line for Essendon's AAMI Community Series match against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on March 6.

The 22-year-old had a breakout season in 2020, averaging 22.14 possessions, 4.79 tackles and 4.93 clearances from his 14 matches for the season.

McGrath signed a new two-year deal with the Bombers in October last year and will join the leadership group in 2021 for the first time in his career.
