AFL games record holder Brent Harvey has said Mason Cox "understands the game now" after the 27-year-old's game against Essendon on Sunday.

Speaking on SEN, the former North Melbourne champion highlighted how well Cox competes in the air, saying his aerial contest "gave the Collingwood smalls opportunities."

"When he didn't mark the ball, he didn't want to get out marked", Harvey said.

Cox has now played 40 games for Collingwood and is averaging a goal a game in 2018 and has surpassed Harvey's expectations.

Harvey said the football world typecast Cox as a ruckman because of his height and that "his improvement has been unbelievable" after coming across from US college basketball in 2014.
