The AFL have confirmed they will appeal the suspensions of both Carlton brothers Ed and Charlie Curnow, after the pair were cleared of intentional umpire contact at the Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Both players made contact with umpires during the Blues' 13-point win over Essendon on Saturday, and were referred directly to the Tribunal by match review officer Michael Christian on Monday for making intentional contact with an umpire.

However, both Ed and Charlie pleaded guilty to careless contact instead of intentional, and both were cleared and instead received a $1000 fine for their troubles.

"Tonight, we both understand the Tribunal's decision and we respect it and the process involved. I'd just like to say we both highly respect the umpires and their position in the game as officiators and their importance to the game at all levels," Ed Curnow told the media after the hearing.
