Docker Stephen Hill has called it a day on his AFL career after making 218 appearances for Fremantle in his 13 years at the club.

The speedy winger hadn't played since Round 18 last year, however was a stalwart in the Fremantle side for the best part of his career.

Hill told the coaching staff and players of his decision on Tuesday morning, and will be sent off this week at the Western Derby against the Eagles.

β€œI’d just like to thank the football club for giving me the opportunity, they drafted me and it allowed me to live out my childhood dream of playing AFL, it’s been an amazing journey,” Hill said to his teammates.

β€œI’ve met some incredible people along the way and it’s definitely hard to say goodbye, but I know it’s the right time."

The 31-year-old made an appearance in the 2013 Grand Final, which the club lost with the encounter being a historic one considering his brother, Brad, played for their opponents in Hawthorn - the first time since 1912 two siblings have played each other in a decider.

Another career highlight was his goal in the same year's final series against the Cats in Geelong, a long-distance sprint from his own half to seal their first home preliminary final ever.

Hill was included into the club's all-time greatest lineup, 25 since 95, on the wing and was given life membership status in 2015.

The latter years of his career were marred by injury, but Hill still was one of the league's most exciting players and his legacy at the club will be profound.
