Brisbane veteran Jack Gunston is seeking a return to Hawthorn 12 months on from his exit from Waverley.

Gunston ventured to the Lions last off-season in a trade deal despite being eligible for free agency, with Brisbane not wanting their move for the triple premiership Hawk to impact the compensation they received for the loss of Dan McStay.

The deal saw Gunston depart the club he played over 200 games for as they worked through a rebuild, with the Lions in a premiership window and wanting to add the 31-year-old to their flag pursuit.

Brisbane would reach the grand final this year but would be without Gunston for their finals run due to injury, with Chris Fagan deciding not to bring the sharpshooter into his side for the decider despite being cleared to play.

After his 17-game season with the Queensland club, Gunston is now seeking a return to Victoria this trade period to rejoin the Hawks.

"The Brisbane Lions confirm Jack Gunston has informed the club of his desire to return to Hawthorn," a Brisbane statement read.

"While understanding Jack's situation, as a contracted player the club is assessing its position and will work through its options.

"The club won't be providing further comment at this time."

The Hawks currently hold Picks 4, 32 and 53 for this year's draft.

Hawthorn are already looking to add Gold Coast forward Mabior Chol to their list this off-season as the club plans to build around first-string forward Mitch Lewis.
