Former Brisbane Lions cult hero Daniel Merrett has been announced as the new Football Development Manager at Sturt Football Club in the SANFL.
Having already had a taste of coaching as an assistant with the Brisbane Lions AFLW side, Merrett has expanded his horizons and now finds himself moving to South Australia to ply his trade in one of the most historic leagues in the country.
Having played 200 games at AFL level, largely as a key defender during a period of turbulence at the Lions, Merrett will bring his invaluable experience to the club as they seek to take the next step following this year's Grand Final loss.
As part of his role, the club announced Merrett "will lead the Club's coaching for the newly introduced Under 14 SANFL competition in Season 2024 and oversee our Club's development squad programs. Additionally, he will actively engage with our zone clubs throughout the season."
As a player, Merrett was a dour defender, who made his name as a tough and reliable combatant down back for the Lions. Having made his debut in 2005, he has been in and around the AFL for close to 20 years.

Having spent his entire career at Brisbane, largely during a rebuild period, his stable presence, not to mention his combative nature, earned him adoration from the Lions faithful.
Merrett retired at the end of the 2016 season, sadly his last game was spent playing on a rampaging Nick Riewoldt, who took 21 marks and kicked nine goals. Merrett will no doubt be hoping for smoother sailing in his new role.
