Brisbane premiership forward Joe Daniher has decided to call time on his AFL career.

The 30-year-old was said to be mulling over his playing future ahead of last Saturday's AFL Grand Final, with the sharpshooter having one year to run on his contract with the Lions.

Daniher has decided to hang up the boots after 204 games, informing teammates of his decision on Thursday morning.

โ€œI retire knowing I gave my absolute all to the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, and I am extremely proud of what I achieved individually and as a team,โ€ Daniher said.

โ€œI am tremendously grateful for the opportunities given to me by both Brisbane and Essendon and I want to thank both clubs and their incredible fans for their support.

โ€œIt's been an incredible journey here at the Brisbane Lions to go from a club that was really struggling at the bottom of the ladder to winning a premiership.

โ€œAs I finish up my career, I do so with the club in a great position on and off the field and I can't wait to see the Brisbane Lions experience more success in the future.

โ€œI am beyond excited by the squad we have at the Lions and especially the young talent we have coming through that are the future stars of this club.

โ€œI want to thank everyone that has played a part in my AFL career and helping me become the player and person I am today.โ€

He leaves the competition as a premiership player after holding a key role in the Lions' grand final victory over the Swans, with his final kick in the game being a goal in the dying stages of Brisbane's 10-goal victory.

Daniher played 108 games for Essendon before seeking a move to Brisbane at the end of the 2020 season.

In Queensland, he managed to find consistent health and fitness after a luckless last few years in the red and black, with Daniher playing 96 games over four seasons as a Lion.

He booted 39 or more goals in each year with Brisbane, including 61 last year - his second best tally behind 65 majors six years earlier with Essendon

He won All-Australian and best and fairest honours in 2017, was handed the Anzac Medal the same year and claimed six leading goalkicker awards across his career - four as a Bomber and two as a Lion.
