Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has confirmed the Magpies are "absolutely committed" to new recruit Chris Mayne, despite the forward's rocky start to his Collingwood career.

The 28-year-old was signed as a free agent at the end of last season, on a deal reportedly worth around $2 million over four years.

Mayne played the first three matches of the 2017 season but only managed two goals, and was dropped back to the VFL after a goalless performance in Collingwood's win over Sydney in Round 3.

The former Docker has also struggled in the reserves, with just nine goals to his name from seven matches.

โ€œMayneโ€™s not going as well as we thought he might, heโ€™s taking longer to settle,โ€ Buckley told Channel 9โ€™s Footy Classified on Monday night.

โ€œIโ€™m coaching Mayney the same way Iโ€™m coaching every other player on the list to try and get the best out of them.

โ€œWeโ€™re absolutely committed to Chris Mayne and finding out what his best football can be. Heโ€™ll have a say in that and the quality of football and the player heโ€™s competing against for the same position will have a say in that.โ€

Mayne played 172 games for Fremantle between 2008-2016 and kicked 196 goals during his time with the Dockers.
