The Western Bulldogs have made a tough call to delist young forward Charlie Clarke, just one game into his AFL career.
The club announced today that the 20-year-old, who was drafted with pick 24 in the 2022 National Draft, will not be offered a new contract for the 2025 season.
Clarke made his AFL debut in Round 9 against Hawthorn, but it was only a brief glimpse of his potential - being subbed out of the match.
He spent the majority of his two seasons at the club developing his skills in the VFL, where he had a standout year with Footscray in 2024, kicking 22 goals and helping the team reach the Preliminary Final.
“Charlie brought plenty of energy and enthusiasm during his time at the Western Bulldogs and was a popular member of the playing squad,” said Sam Power, the Bulldogs' GM of List Management and Recruiting.
“We wish Charlie all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at Mission Whitten Oval.”
Hailing from the Sandringham Dragons, he was known for his intensity and versatility, able to transition into the midfield when needed. His debut game, though short-lived, was a reward for effort after being drafted from the community football scene in Port Melbourne.
Clarke's story was not without its share of drama. Earlier this year, he was caught up in an unusual incident involving his brother Conor, who faced a lifetime ban for pitch invasion at a Collingwood match.
While the Bulldogs are saying goodbye to Clarke, they are eager to build a contending side as soon as 2025, with pressure rising on Luke Beveridge and the club to capitalise on the Bontempelli era.
In addition to Clarke's departure, the Bulldogs have also made other list changes this off-season. They bid farewell to midfielders Bailey Smith and Jack Macrae, who both requested trades, as well as defender Caleb Daniel, who was moved to North Melbourne for Pick 25.
Kelsey Rypstra and Dominic Bedendo have also been delisted.
The axeing of these three does open up spots as they prepare for next month's National Draft.
Sam Power expressed optimism about their draft hand, stating, “We're really happy—it's a strong draft as everyone talks about. To have picks 17, 25, and 35 is really positive.”
The Bulldogs also hold all of their future picks, allowing them flexibility during the draft, with potential for live trading or other strategies on the night.
The club's focus on bringing in fresh talent is crucial, especially after a tumultuous trade period that saw significant changes.
