Carlton forward Jack Silvagni has suffered a severe season-ending knee injury.
Silvagni, who signed a fresh two-year deal with the Blues late last year, will miss the entire 2024 season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament at training at IKON Park.
Thursday afternoon scans confirmed Carlton's worst fears for the father-son goalkicker, who is understood to have departed the Blues' match simulation hitout.
"Jack had put in such a significant body of work over summer to put himself in a great position to attack the year, so we are all really feeling for Jack right now," Carlton General Manager of Football Brad Lloyd said in a club statement on Thursday.
"While the emotion right now is one of disappointment, it is well known that Jack's work ethic and commitment to the football club is unwavering, and it is his strong character that will be his biggest strength through his recovery process.
"We will be with him every step of the way through his rehab, and no doubt the entire Carlton faithful will be. With the energy he brings, he'll continue to have a positive impact around the Club and within the playing group throughout this season."
The 26-year-old played 16 senior games last season, impressing in Michael Voss' forward sector on his way to earning a new deal.
The Blues are also reeling from defender Jacob Weitering's injury after the star backman suffered a high-grade calf strain at training.
Carlton commences its 2024 season against the Brisbane Lions in the AFL's inaugural Opening Round.
