The AFL Integrity Unit has been made aware and are in the process of conducting an investigation into former Gold Coast player and recent Carlton recruit Elijah Hollands after he was served with a notice to appear in court relating to possession of an illicit substance.
The matter was made aware to Carlton as recently as last month, with the club deciding to proceed with their recruitment of the young midfielder this week via the trade period.
Hollands was traded to the Blues by the Suns on Wednesday.
On Thursday both Gold Coast and Carlton revealed that Hollands has been required to appear in court after being found in possession of an illicit substance.
"The Gold Coast SUNS can confirm that former player Elijah Hollands has been served with a notice to appear in court on one count of possession of a small quantity of an illicit substance," a statement from the Suns read.
"All players receive extensive education on the AFL's Illicit Drugs Policy and are fully aware of the behaviours and standards expected of them as AFL players.
"The AFL Integrity Unit have been made aware and are in the process of conducting their own investigation.
"As the matter is currently before the courts, the Club will not be making any further comments at this stage."
Carlton have confirmed Hollands is scheduled to commence pre-season training next month.
The matter comes on the same day the AFL confirmed Melbourne player Joel Smith had tested positive for an illicit substance in-competition, with the Demons swingman immediately put under a provisionary suspension.
