Carlton defender Jacob Weitering could be in doubt for his side's Opening Round meeting with Brisbane after suffering a high-grade calf strain at training on Friday.
The Blues confirmed the injury following their main session at Princes Park, where Weitering sustained the setback.
While further review into Weitering's ailment will take place in the coming weeks, a high-grade strain of the calf can take close to two months to recover, placing the two-time best and fairest winner in a race against the clock for Carlton's season opener in early March.
"Carlton co-vice captain and key defender Jacob Weitering is expected to be sidelined for an extended period with a calf injury," a club update read.
"The injury occurred during [Friday's] main training session, with scans confirming a high-grade calf strain.
"The injury will be reviewed in the coming weeks to determine return to play timelines."
Weitering featured in a career-high 26 games for the Blues last year, helping lead Michael Voss' squad to a preliminary final before taking out the 2023 John Nicholls Medal and earning his fourth successive All-Australian squad nod.
Carlton's 2024 campaign is set to get underway on Friday, March 8 against Brisbane as part of the Opening Round schedule, with the Blues returning to the MCG the following Thursday to face Richmond.
The Blues are also scheduled to face Geelong and Melbourne at Ikon Park ahead of their clash with the Lions as part of their pre-season plans.
