Patrick Dangerfield is the best player in the AFL, followed by Dustin Martin and Lance Franklin, according to Champion Data.

He may have won the Brownlow Medal, secured All-Australian honours and broke the record for most disposals in a game, but Tom Mitchell is not listed in the top 25.

According to Champion Data, Mitchell's performances in the past two seasons makes him the 28th best player in the game.

In his first two seasons at the Hawks, Mitchell has won a Brownlow Medal, become a dual best-and-fairest winner and All-Australian and broke the record for most disposals in a season.

Halfway through the 2018 season, Mitchell was ranked the 50th best player in the game, but his brilliant second half of the season saw him rank inside the top 15 players and move his total ranking to 28.

Champion Data use a scientific formula to determine their ranking system, which assesses performances over the past two years using a weighted system.

One knock on Mitchell's game is his inabilty to transcend disposals into impact on the scoreboard.

The Brownlow Medallist's impact improved as the 2018 season progressed and should continue in an upward trajectory in 2019.
