AFL broadcaster Channel 7 have added to their lineup ahead of this week's pair of preliminary finals, with Collingwood veteran Scott Pendlebury stepping into a role with the network's news arm.

Days after Channel 7 confirmed the return of decorated commentator Bruce McAvaney to a hosting role for the remainder of this year's AFL finals series, the broadcasters have revealed Pendlebury as their latest addition.

The 36-year-old is set to feature as an analyst on 7Newsย on Thursday night and will also hold a role on the network's grand final coverage.

โ€œI am really looking forward to joining the 7NEWS sports team for the AFL's preliminary and grand final weeks,โ€ Pendlebury said in a statement.

โ€œThe month of September is undoubtedly the best period in the AFL calendar.

โ€œWe have never seen a tighter competition and there will be a lot to discuss across the three upcoming games.

โ€œTo reach ultimate success a lot needs to go in your favour, every moment matters. I can't wait to see where it lands this season.โ€

The two-time premiership player brings 403 games of experience to a group of broadcasters, commentators and analysts littered with decorated careers through football or in the media.

The role for Pendlebury could hint at a potential post-career venture for the former Collingwood captain, who has re-signed with the Magpies for a 20th season.

Pendlebury has previously spoken on his desire to eventually step into a coaching career after he retires, with the midfielder currently holding an assistant role with Melbourne school Haileybury.

The Sale junior is expected to take a break from football immediately after he hangs up the boots before eventually returning to the AFL landscape in some capacity.

The 2024 AFL Finals Series continues on Friday night with the opening preliminary final between Sydney and Port Adelaide at the SCG, with the winner of that contest to face the victor from Saturday's match between Geelong and Brisbane in the grand final.
