Since falling agonisingly short in their preliminary final against the Swans, Collingwood has now turned their attention to securing talented midfielder Jordan De Goey at the club.

Amid significant interest from Moorabbin, Collingwood is aiming to beat off St Kilda for the restricted free agent's services.

In pushing for his signature, the Magpies have offered De Goey a five-year deal to stick with the Magpies going forward, according to The Age.

However, such a deal would be comprised of a number of behavioural clauses which the 26-year-old would have to adhere to.

Whilst these clauses remain a sticking point in contract discussions, a club source revealed that they are unlikely to be too strict, particularly since the AFL has already implemented rules and regulations to prevent poor behaviour.

Ultimately, the club administration, which has broader aspects of the club to consider, will need to approve these clauses before finalising the 26-year-old's contract.

The St Kevin's College product was vital in the Magpies' quest for a flag, polling 15 votes in the Gary Ayres Award to sit second on the leaderboard, only one vote behind teammate Jack Crisp in first.

Following their loss to the Swans, coach Craig McRae praised De Goey's final half of the year, labelling him as a required player for the club in the future.

The two have formed a strong bond since the midfielder's mid-season trip to Bali, with McRae desperate to hold onto him.

“I grabbed his manager (Ryan Vague) and said ‘let’s get to work on this,’ because I’ve said this openly, I want Jordy at our footy club next year,” McRae said.

“Now I don’t know how that’s progressing, but hopefully it’s progressing in the right direction — not because he’s Jordy de Goey, but I just think this environment is the best place for Jordy de Goey.”

Whether he signs for the Saints or the Pies, De Goey has made clear that he wants his career to head in a different direction.

Being a restricted free agent, Collingwood can match any offer the Saints give.

However, should De Goey want to leave the club, it would appear as though the Pies would have to let him go through a trade.

In such a case, it is likely that the Saints' No. 9 pick would be of great use on the trade front.
