Collingwood remain hopeful star midfielder Jordan De Goey will be available for Opening Round as he continues to deal with a knee issue.

De Goey has been limited over the summer due to multiple concerns, with a knock to the knee his latest ailment.

The injury has the 28-year-old in some doubt for Collingwood's first game of the season against GWS, with De Goey facing a key training session on Thursday.

De Goey missed Wednesday's 83-point Charity Shield win over Richmond due to the setback but will press his case for a role in next week's contest.

The Magpies won't risk having De Goey return early as he nurses his current niggle, with the club looking to find the "right balance" with their match-winner's recovery.

"Jordy is certainly pushing for it. He's going to train strongly tomorrow morning," assistant coach Jordan Roughead said after the win over the Tigers.

"He's one that we just need to make sure we get his loads to the right level and inject him at the right time.

"We want to set him up to have a really strong season, so we're not going to prioritise Round 0 over the rest of the year.

"We're just going to make sure that we find the right balance with him."

Defender Brayden Maynard is also dealing with a foot injury that has the All-Australian needing to prove his fitness ahead of Collingwood's season opener.

Maynard is expected to face the Giants after dealing with soreness from last week's trial in Queensland.

"We expect Brayden to play," Roughead said.

"He had a little bit of soreness through his foot after the game last weekend and we just wanted to make sure that we set him up to have a really strong season.

"This was the right selection for this week."

Roughead played down any concern surrounding star Nick Daicos, who was taken out of the win over Richmond before three-quarter time.

Daicos, who has been dealing with plantar fasciitis over the pre-season, was proppy at times during his final pre-season outing, which he dominated on his way to 32 disposals and four goal assists.

"The plan with Nick was always to take him out of the game early," Roughead said.

"I'm not sure what the medical report is, but I'm sure he's fine. He had another really strong performance and we look forward to him doing the same next weekend."

Collingwood's campaign commences next Sunday against GWS at Engie Stadium for the final match of Opening Round.
