Darcy Moore has revealed he wants to be Collingwood's next captain.

The 26-year-old star, who was taken with the ninth pick in the 2014 national draft, can play either forward or back, and has more than 100 games under his belt for the club, has often been talked about as a natural leader.

A 2020 All-Australian, and a member of the 2016 22 under 22 team, Moore has turned himself into an out and out star for Collingwood, who are currently sitting on the fringes of the top eight as the halfway point of the 2022 season approaches.

Moore was set to be one of the biggest names in the end of season free agency market, however, is now far more likely to finish his career as a one-club player after signing a staggering six-year extension to keep him at the Magpies until at least the end of the 2028 season.

Speaking to AFL.com.au, Moore said he has now turned his attention to becoming the club's next captain, although wasn't rushing current leader Scott Pendlebury out the door.

"It'd be a real honour," Moore said.

"To learn off Scott has been amazing."

Moore, who is regarded as one of the game's best defenders, despite also being able to play up front, said his new deal is a sign of mass commitment to the club.

"A six-year deal is a massive commitment when you're 25 or 26 years old," Moore says.

"I'm hugely committed to this club and this group and want to see success. That's why we play footy.

"You don't set the alarm for 5.30 or six o'clock every day if you're not committed."

Kicking 67 goals in his 112-game career to date, and the son of famous Magpie Peter Moore, the 26-year-old has been crucial for Collingwood again this year, averaging a tick over 14 disposals and just under seven spoils, with almost three intercept marks per game.

Collingwood will continue to push their claims for a spot in the top eight on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Carlton Blues, with difficult matches against the Hawthorn Hawks and Melbourne Demons ahead before they have a Round 14 bye.
