Collingwood is reportedly setting its sights on Melbourne Storm's General Manager, Frank Ponissi, to fill its vacant GM of Football position.
According to 9News reporter Tom Morris, Ponissi has emerged as a primary candidate in the Magpies' search, as Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly explores his options following the departure of Graham Wright.
Ponissi's experience at the Storm spans 17 years, where he has played a pivotal role in overseeing the club's sustained success, which includes four premierships.
Known for his expertise in player development and strategy, Ponissi is highly respected in the rugby league world and has established a Victorian pathways program this year, building a stronger connection from the grassroots to the elite level.
While primarily based in rugby league, Ponissi has close ties to Collingwood: Nick Maxwell, a former Collingwood premiership captain, has worked with the Storm, and Collingwood coach Craig McRae has provided insights to the Storm's players before their recent NRL finals.
Morris described the potential move as “a remarkable code switch” and noted that Kelly has already reached out to Ponissi about the role.
While Collingwood has cast a wide net in its search, reportedly also considering Adelaide Crows list manager Justin Reid, Ponissi stands out for his success and leadership in the sports industry.
Should Ponissi make the switch, he would bring a wealth of experience from a different code, much like when high-profile figures in sports administration cross into new territories.
