Collingwood draftee Harry DeMattia is facing months on the sidelines as a pre-season injury threatens to hinder his maiden campaign in the black and white.

The Dandenong Stingrays product has been an impressive addition under Craig McRae since being taken in the first round of last November's count, with his leadership, grunt, speed and versatility leading traits for the teenager.

Viewed as a strong chance to get a look at senior action early into his first season at AFL level, DeMattia's hopes of an Opening Round debut are now said to be shattered after a recent finger injury.

DeMattia has sustained a finger tendon and will consult a specialist this week, with the ailment to place the dashing utility out of action for up to 12 weeks.

The pre-season blow rules DeMattia out of action until after the Magpies' Round 5 bye, with a return via the VFL now looking likely.

โ€œThis is an unfortunate setback for Harry who injured his finger during a training drill on Monday,โ€ Collingwood's EGM Football Graham Wright said.

โ€œWhilst he is expected to be sidelined for an 8โ€“12-week period, Harry will still be able to participate in running drills and a gym program.โ€

The reigning premiers are set to start the new season close to full health outside of DeMattia and spearhead Daniel McStay, who is expected to miss the entire 2024 season with an ACL injury.

The Magpies haven't been without their pre-season concerns though, with Josh Diacos (leg) and Brody Mihocek (calf) missing training periods due to their respective setbacks.

Collingwood are likely to have duo Brayden Maynard and Jamie Elliott at peak health come the start of their pre-season fixture after the pair underwent shoulder surgery during the off-season.

The Magpies will face North Melbourne and Richmond later this month before heading to New South Wales to face GWS at GIANTS Stadium for their Opening Round clash on Saturday, March 9.
