The Age journalist Rohan Connolly has listed his top five players who went on to excel at their next clubs.
For SEN.com.au Connolly give reasons behind each selection, and while some interesting names feature, it's no surprise who tops the list.
"He had a good career at Carlton, nine seasons, 184 games and 290 goals but the Blues allowed him to go to Carlton for an extra $40,000 a season with all of their extra money going towards getting Dale Thomas. No disrespect to Dale, he’s had a pretty good career… But they would look back now and there’s no way they wouldn’t pay him that extra money," Connolly said.
"He had an okay career at the Bulldogs between 1968-1975. Pretty nondescript, played a lot as a key defender. Went to South Melbourne and then won a Brownlow. In those days he was the Swans. He was huge for the Swans," Connolly said.
"177 games at Footscray and then went to Fitzroy and kicked 576 goals with consecutive Colemans along the way. Footscray had a habit of letting good players go. In the late 70’s and early 80’s Footscray were in big financial trouble, so they had to sell a lot of players," Connolly said.
"They were far too happy to let him go. They really wanted Neville Fields from Essendon, who ended up back at Essendon anyway. TD captained two premiership sides and is in their Team of the Century. South, who later became Sydney Swans, desperately regretted letting him go," Connolly said.
"Six games for the Hawks in 1982, he was a wild boy and didn’t often go to training. He went and played at Myrtleford in 1983, and from then played 14 seasons, 242 games and 1,021 goals for the Cats," Connolly said.
