Geelong and winger Isaac Smith are understood to have gotten discussions underway on a one-year contract extension that would see the veteran midfielder sign on for a 13th season in the AFL.
Smith joined the Cats as a free agent at the end of the 2020 season after 210 games and three premierships in the brown and gold.
The 33-year-old has been a key piece in the Cats' strong run since venturing to Kardinia Park, adding 29 wins from 40 matches to his already win-heavy career record.
Smith turned down offers from the Hawks and Melbourne in favour of signing with Geelong in hope of securing further premiership success, with 2022 looming as a strong chance to add another medallion to his decorated career as the Cats currently sit in pole position for the flag.
Should Chris Scott's side fall short of the summit again this year, Smith is likely to have another chance in 2023 as talks on a new deal take place.
According to 7 News' Mitch Cleary, the Cats and Smith have begun discussions that would see the Wagga Wagga product extend his stay at the Cattery to a third term.
Smith is among several Geelong veterans currently unsigned for next season, with Tom Hawkins, Joel Selwood, Shaun Higgins, Luke Dahlhaus and Gary Rohan also yet to secure their futures for 2023.
Cleary's report suggests the Cats will look to lock away Hawkins shortly after finalising terms with Smith, with Scott keen to secure key components of his squad for the next 12 months.
Geelong are already floated to be major players in the open market this year, with links to an array of ready-made midfielders emerging in recent weeks.
The Pivot City side have reportedly shown interest in Demons midfielder Angus Brayshaw, Collingwood free agent Jordan De Goey and Giants duo Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper.
The Cats will look to extend their place atop the AFL ladder on Saturday night when they meet with fellow premiership contenders Carlton at the MCG.
